DESCRIPTION OF THE WINERY
Catena Zapata, a historic family winery founded in 1902, is now run by third and fourth generation winegrowers Nicolás and his daughter Laura Catena. Nicolás Catena Zapata is known as the man who revolutionised Argentine wine in the 1980s by focusing primarily on quality. Planting vineyards at 1,500 metres above sea level and leading the re-entry of Malbec – a French varietal almost forgotten by the rest of the world – into the wine world, Catena Zapata and Nicolás Catena Zapata have received numerous awards including Decanter. Man of the Year from Decanter magazine, The Wine Spectator Distinguished Service Award and Winery of the Year from publications around the world.
ELABORATION:
Manual harvest. Fermentation takes place in small oak barrels, cement and stainless steel tanks. Fermentation temperature: 26/28ºC for 10 to 15 days. Post-fermentation maceration: 5/10 days. Complete malolactic fermentation. Aging in French oak barrels for 18 months. At the end of our winter, Dr. Nicolás Catena Zapata supervises the final blend before bottling.
